Dunbar School 2019
On Thursday December 19th, Focus on the City was a part of the first ever School District 189 takeover. We were fortunate to adopt a class of 4th graders at Dunbar Elementary School. Each hall way was named after a HBCU and were in the Tennessee State University hallway. 21 students were given backpacks, science kits, historical and inspirational books and a 5 dollar Mcdonald’s gift card, toothpaste and toothbrushes and socks. Students were asked 3 Black History questions and the 3 winners won a globe. The backpacks had a theme of celebrating black history. We had a small discussion on entrepreneurship. Backpacks highlighted black culture and images of excellence and success. There was an extra excitement in the kid’s eyes as they saw beautiful images on backpacks that reflected them. When I was a teenager, I would see my father, Alonzo Perrin, on Christmas morning walk out of the house in the morning with candy canes and 2 dollar bills to give to people. Included in each backpack were four 2 dollar bills. One honoring my dad and one from me There were also 2 candy canes , one honoring my dad and one from me. Please see the link below for the full story. Thank you.
