Summer 2019 Event

The 2019 Health Fair/Back pack giveaway was a success this year. This event was held at the Jackie Joyner Kersee Center in East Saint Louis, Illinois on August 3rd 2019. This year we served over 300 people including parents and children. Each child received a fully supplied back pack, a pair of new shoes, a pair of new socks and one outfit for one day. They also received books on inspiration, motivation and significant historical people. We are grateful for the families that came to our event. Every family received a $20 dollar gift card to Save A Lot grocery stores. We raffled a Samsung Chromebook laptop to help one blessed family to prepare for the upcoming school year. Parents received books and resources on parenting and leadership and inspiration. Thanks to the Jackie Joyner Kersee Foundation for hosting this event. I would like to give a special thanks to all of the volunteers and donors and sponsors for this event. We will be back with more resources and surprises next year. Thanks for the support.

Dunbar School 2019

On Thursday December 19th, Focus on the City was a part of the first ever School District 189 takeover. We were fortunate to adopt a class of 4th graders at Dunbar Elementary School. Each hall way was named after a HBCU and were in the Tennessee State University hallway. 21 students were given backpacks, science kits, historical and inspirational books and a 5 dollar Mcdonald’s gift card, toothpaste and toothbrushes and socks. Students were asked 3 Black History questions and the 3 winners won a globe. The backpacks had a theme of celebrating black history. We had a small discussion on entrepreneurship. Backpacks highlighted black culture and images of excellence and success. There was an extra excitement in the kid’s eyes as they saw beautiful images on backpacks that reflected them. When I was a teenager, I would see my father, Alonzo Perrin, on Christmas morning walk out of the house in the morning with candy canes and 2 dollar bills to give to people. Included in each backpack were four 2 dollar bills. One honoring my dad and one from me There were also 2 candy canes , one honoring my dad and one from me.
